About Dr.

Anand Shantaram Kawade

I, Dr. Anand Shantaram Kawade, M.D; DCH, am a pediatrician by training and has more than 35 years of clinical experience of managing children of all age groups in the public and private hospital set up as well in large scale community set up. As a trained vaccinologist, public health scientist and clinical trial specialist, my experience of conducting large phase II & III, GCP/ ICH compliant, community-based vaccine trials is crucial for clinical development and understanding safety & efficacy of new investigational vaccine. I have been a principal investigator for large phase III trials of vaccines of National importance like Rotavac, Rotasiil, Pneumosiil, Covishield, and Cervavac which are included in National Immunization Program of India. Additionally, I am responsible for clinical development of other important vaccines like Hexavalent, Typhoid, Influenza, Sputnik-V, Pentavalent meningococcal, recombinant BCG. Currently,I am working as principal investigator for vaccines trials of emerging pathogens like Chikengunya and yellow fever. Besides, vaccine trials, I am involved in various disease burden studies, epidemiological studies, implementation research and intervention studies. Currently I am working as Head of Department, Vadu Rural Health Program, KEMHRC, Pune-412216, Maharashtra, India which a community based clinical research site contributing towards biomedical research aligning with national aims through its’ Health and Demographic Surveillance System. I support the Vadu HDSS (Health and Demographic Surveillance System) activities includes training and assessment of verbal autopsies, advising for conduct of clinical trials in community, supporting field activities & data collection and identification of translational clinical research in Vadu HDSS. I am certified trainer of trainer (TOT) for Clinical Investigator Development Program by CDSA, Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. I am affiliated to various national academic bodies (Indian Academy of Pediatrics) and international collaboration (Brighton collaboration). I was member of Brighton Collaboration case definition working groups of ARDS to create and revise case definitions. I have multiple publications to my credits in high impact international journals includes Lancet, Vaccine, NEJM and Nature. Apart from my areas of interests like vaccinology, infectious diseases, pediatric research, I am keenly interested in medical teaching, medical education technology and health technology.
